Recent Spotify Subscription Price Hike Disappoints Users Yet Again
Spotify, the music streaming giant, has come under fire once again after announcing another price hike for its premium plans. This second increase within a year has left many users feeling frustrated and questioning its value. As long-time Spotify users, even we were disappointed because an entire year hasn’t passed yet since they had a price increase, but here they are again.
There’s no doubt that Spotify is one of the finest music streaming out there. There’s no need for fast internet services if you’re subscribed to premium because you can just download everything and Its algorithm is state-of-the-art – not being biased but even Apple Music won’t beat it. However, love for a platform can only stretch so far, especially when the price keeps going up without a clear corresponding benefit.
Spotify Pricing Over the Years
Let’s take a trip down memory lane – or rather, a climb up the cost mountain – with a look at Spotify’s pricing history. In 2008, Spotify Premium launched with a friendly $9.99 price tag, offering ad-free listening, on-demand playback, and offline downloads. This price remained stable for several years, becoming the benchmark for music streaming subscriptions and attracting a loyal user base accustomed to this sweet spot.
Spotify’s Introduction of Tiered Pricing in 2014
Fast forward to 2014, Spotify introduced tiered pricing with a Family plan. The first pricing structure they did during the release was $9.99 then you pay an additional $5 for every member monthly with a limit of 5 additional users. However, they changed it to a fixed $14.99 per month, allowing up to six accounts. Other plans were introduced over the years as well, such as the Duo and Student plan.
Spotify’s First Price Hike in July 2023
In July 2023, the first price hike happened. A 10% increase was announced by the music streaming giant, saying that they need to invest in innovation and artist payouts. The individual plan price jumped from $9.99 to $10.99.
While some users were a bit disappointed, the long period of price stability softened the blow for many. After all, Spotify Premium still has a lot to offer. Even if you don’t have a reliable wireless service, you’ll still be able to enjoy your favorite songs.
June 2024: A Second Price Hike
June 2024 brought another price hike, pushing the individual plan to a staggering $11.99. This second increase within a year triggered a wave of user frustration, particularly considering the short timeframe between adjustments. The figure is still not clear whether many users have canceled their subscriptions or not, but one thing’s clear: Spotify subscribers are not happy.
Is the Price Hike Really Justified?
Spotify states that the price increase is necessary to fund ongoing development and innovation. This could include improving the platform’s infrastructure, developing new features, or securing licensing deals for exclusive content. However, the problem is, that many users haven’t seen a significant improvement in the platform’s core functionalities since the price hike.
Nowadays, everything is becoming more expensive – may it be groceries, internet plans (not all though, some are still budget-friendly like Boost Infinite and others), transportation fares, and many more. That’s why not everyone has a dollar or two to spare, especially if it’s a monthly expense.
What’s Next for Spotify?
Well, the only thing left to do for Spotify is to justify their increasing costs by actually making improvements users can see, feel, and enjoy. Over 200 million people are paying for their premium plan, so there’s no reason why they won’t be able to achieve what they’re trying to do with the price hikes they did the past year. Only then will their subscribers regain their trust in this music streaming giant.
